The Digital Pioneers DVD Series

The Digital Pioneers | A DVD Series
This project presented an opportunity to create an Amazon DVD series that focuses on a select group of graphic designers throughout history.

The Digital Pioneers series focuses on the work and lives of four postmodernist designers: Ed Fella, David Carson, Neville Brody, and Tibor Kalman. The philosophy of "deconstructivism" was an element that united each of these designers. As a result, the concept of a DVD series itself was deconstructed to visually represent an older form of entertainment—VHS tapes and video cassettes. Inside of each DVD case is a link to a free typeface inspired by each designer.

Process
The covers were created by making a collage of each individual artist’s work in photoshop and heavily editing them. The designs of each cover were inspired by various VHS cover designs and photoshopped to create an old, weathered appearance. The letterforms that create each designer’s name is taken directly from type found throughout their work. The idea of appropriating the VHS packaging image was inspired by Ed Fella’s process of drawing typefaces from the 1920s into his modern work.
